Review of Closenuf- Closenuf (Wreckords Records) By ST Staff 2 out of 5 Paws Songtiger Artist Closenuf: Click Here It's been a while since the last CD review, and I apologize. I've been spending all my extra time engineering and mixing a couple of projects in my studio, and let me tell you, I'm pretty excited about the final result. Anyone you know? Maybe. Anyway, here is the newest installment of Songtiger reviews. Keep your discs coming! The CD opens with all the mystery of Van Halen's 1984. Universe has these swirling keyboards that prepare you for something. You expect something grand. Then you get "Can You Feel It?" hitting your ears. The guitar in the intro is a bit sloppy from all of the chorus on it. The keyboards come in with a very cool hook. Then the voice enters. Unfortunately, there's not much memorable here. I don't remember any vocal hooks. There were pitch issues, and the timbre of his voice is very thin and pointed. It lacks the warmth and openness it so desperately needs. The back-up vocals in the chorus sound like they were recorded far back in a cave. The overall mix lacks the crispness that sets each instrument apart. The third song, Music Man, has a 60's feel to it, but the vocals just don't do it for me. They sound far off in the distance. They sound messy with a washing delay on them. Also, they don't identify themselves as a separate part as much as they just follow the keyboard. The vocals sound more open, which was a good idea. I would have liked to see more of an independent part, a counter melody to the keys assert itself. Difference, is the strongest song on the album. The melodies are catchier. The instrument levels are more in check. They play with dynamics. The vocals are clearer, and have a decent melody. The Rhodes reminds me of Riders on the Storm. The background vocals are well placed and sound good. This album has a definite classic rock feel. I hear Bowie, The Who, and Tom Petty. There are some good instrumental hooks and solos, but some of the surrounding playing is a little sloppy. There are not enough vocal hooks to make this album memorable. The production didn't help. The vocals were too effected and way back in the mix for much of the album. The guitars and keys took turns being the loudest throughout the CD. When one instrument stood out, it was hard to hear what the other instruments were doing. Some of the solos were buried beneath rhythm guitars. Don't get me wrong, I think these guys have potential, but they should look to work with external producers who can help the songwriting process and can help craft a CD that can better represent what they are capable of. Closenuf? Not if they want longevity in this business in 2007. This is a valliant effort, but it just comes up short. |
